Voice Over Tips – some tips for our voice over artists;
1. Let’s start with the script
How the script is translated and formatted makes a huge difference. Reading a script which has been accurately translated without any grammatical or spelling mistakes is much easier than reading one that has many errors. In addition, the formatting of the text is very important as well. Ideally, the documents should be provided to you prior to the recording which will allow you time to practice, and also spot any errors or change the formatting to make it easier for you to read. This is, however, not always possible due to time constraints. Our advice to you is, if you find many errors in the text, advise us so that we can get them corrected by the translator. Don’t let the poor quality of someone else’s work affect your work.
2. Move your lips – Enunciate
We don’t usually think about how our lips are moving when we talk to others on a daily basis, however, the movement of our lips highly affects the clarity of our voice. Make sure you enunciate each word clearly.
3. Speed
The amount of words in a script can increase or decrease depending on which language that script has been translated from. This can affect the speed at which you will have to read to keep the recording in the same time frames as the original recording. If the circumstances allow, try to give yourself time and read each sentence slowly with pauses between sentences. This will reduce any errors which might occur as a result of trying to read too fast. The pauses can be shortened by the editing team at a later point if needed. At times, however, you might have to read at quite a fast speed – even then, try to pause between sentences or where there are commas and practice reading the script beforehand if possible.
4. Practice
As they say, practice makes perfect. Practice reading out loud whenever you can. Set some time aside each week to practice and try to read text from different sources, for example, novels, academic articles, and government policies. The more variety the better as each text will be written differently in a different context.
5. Reflect
If possible, purchase basic recording equipment for your home which will allow you to record your voice when you practice and listen back to it. This will allow you to spot any errors you are making and think about how you can improve.
