Getting Married in Thailand or Registering Your Marriage in Thailand (including registering same sex marriage in Thailand)
At Modus Language Services, we provide advice on procedures to register your marriage in Thailand, and translation of all relevant documents, including getting the documents legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and/or your embassy before and after the marriage.
Things you need to know about Getting Married in Thailand
If you are getting married in Thailand and would also like to register your marriage in Thailand:
- The first thing you will need is an Affidavit (a document) from your Embassy in Thailand stating that you are single and eligible to marry.
- Another document you will need from your Embassy in Thailand is a photocopy of the first page of your passport with the Embassy’s stamp.
To obtain these documents, you will have to make an appointment with your embassy in Thailand beforehand. We can help you with this, however, we cannot go to your embassy on your behalf, as you are required to be present at the appointment yourself.
If your partner is also a foreigner, they will need to do the same as well. If your partner is Thai, they only need to have their Thai ID card ready.
Once you have these documents ready, we will help you translate these documents into Thai and get them legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This process takes about 3-5 days. Once the documents have been legalized, you can use them to get your marriage legally registered in Thailand. This process applies for both heterosexual couples and same sex marriage.
If you are organizing your own wedding, you can either take these documents to the local district office (near your accommodation in Thailand) or invite the local registrar to your wedding ceremony. We can help you arrange this as well or accompany you to the local district office.
Once you have registered your marriage, the local district office will provide you with a Marriage Certificate and a Marriage Registration document (plus additional copies if you require) in Thai (some districts are able to provide English copies). We will then help you translate these documents to English and get the documents legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs again. We can also help you with getting these documents certified by your embassy in Thailand if needed and translate them into other languages such as Russian, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and more.
